HafenCity, adjacent to Speicherstadt, was also born in 2003 when the free port area was opened up. It extends to the Elbe bridges and is the largest urban development project in Europe. Modern architecture is combined with harbour views, many shipping and maritime trading companies are located here, as well as several restaurants, bars, hotels and shops. The Elbphilharmonie, Hamburg's wonderful and world-famous concert hall, towers above everything and offers not only high art but also fantastic views over the city and the harbour. It's especially good to sit on the benches on the water side of the Unilever building, eat an ice cream and watch the harbour, in good weather of course.
