FAIRMONT MIRAMAR HOTEL & BUNGALOWS

Since 1875, Fairmont Miramar personifies Santa Monica

our Story

A grand estate built by Senator John P. Jones, Miramar dovetailed beautifully with his founding of Santa Monica and love of California. A century later, at Jones's original miramar - or home with "a view of the sea" - we honor history by preserving its' 1920's-1930's buildings on five verdant acres, and providing timeless California hospitality from the heart in award-winning fashion.

1875

John P. Jones, former Nevada senator and silver mining magnate, arrived in west Los Angeles to build a railroad and harbor to transport silver to San Francisco. Along with partner Robert Baker, they bought seaside property and founded Santa Monica.

1880s

Beyond founding the city, John Jones and wife Georgina built Santa Monica's first Miramar, or home with a “view of the sea". While hosting American icons Susan B. Anthony and Mark Twain, Georgina planted the Moreton Bay Fig Tree, a historic landmark.

1920 - 1930s

In 1921, Gilbert Stevenson bought Jones' property and converted it into a hotel, soon adding the 6-story Palisades Wing. By 1932, The Great Depression forced a sale, Jones' original home was razed, and seaside bungalows and swimming pool were added.

1940 - 1990s

During WWII, the Army commandeered Miramar to house returning overseas troops. By 1949, after another sale and remodel, the 10-story Ocean Tower was built. For five decades, Miramar became a celebrity magnet and iconic Hollywood filming location.

2000s and Beyond

By 2000, the hotel was flagged by Fairmont Hotels & Resorts. In 2006, tech titan Michael Dell's MSD Capital bought the hotel, starting a 15 year modernization which introduced FIG Restaurant, the Spa, The Bungalow, Dogtown Coffee and Soko omakase.

In the 20's & 30's, Miramar attracted Hollywood's brightest starlets - Marilyn Monroe, Jean Harlow, Claudette Colbert, Jean Simmons - for Swing and Big Band entertainment. Some even moved into the Palisades Wing - Greta Garbo stayed for four years.
