FAIRMONT GRAND DEL MAR

Art and Architecture of The Grand

our Story

In 1920, Paris Singer, heir to the Singer sewing machine fortune, made a deal with architect Addison Mizner, offering him $6,000 annually to keep his designs exclusive to Palm Beach, Florida. This birthed the iconic Mediterranean-style Palm Beach look, seen today at Fairmont Grand Del Mar. Set on 400 acres, the resort's design, crafted by Robert Altevers and Warren Sheets, is lavish and romantic.

Cast Stone and Stone Accents

Mizner’s trendsetting use of hand-forged cast stone to replicate Medieval and Renaissance doorways and columns is recreated by Stone Legends. More than 30 types of stone and Italian marble, carved by artisans in Italy to accentuate the entryways and loggias.

Vibrant Roof Tiles and Copper Accents

The resort’s Mediterranean-style roof is adorned with traditional Roman pan tiles made by Redlands Clay Tile, crafted in the same way for thousands of years. Copper accents on the chimney caps, light fixtures, and rain gutters enhance its period charm.

Custom Woodwork, Masterful Ironwork and Stenciling

Mont Bleau & Associates used 35 wood finishes across 16 species, including Pear Wood and Australian Cypress, for intricate millwork. Under Sheets' direction, 24 craftsmen spent months hand-stenciling and painting decorative ceilings.

Layered Light, Glazed Tile and Plaster Finishes

The resort features exterior lighting with gas lamps and layered accents, creating a romantic ambiance. Hand-painted tiles from Malibu Tile Company add vibrant color, while hand-troweled plaster in a unique rose hue enhances the Mediterranean aesthetic.

Fabrics and Furnishings

Sheets created custom fabrics, accessories, and furnishings, with over 2,000 unique pieces of furniture and art throughout the property. Many artworks are framed in exact replicas of frames crafted by artisans in eastern Italy.

The team aimed to create a fresh, romantic theme that was unexpected for the area, drawing inspiration from Addison Mizner's Spanish and Moorish influences. His style is evident in the resort’s rich hues, arched doorways, and ornate stone accents.
