On May 31, 1928, at 3 AM, Charles Lindbergh, the most famous man in America, was lost in the fog.
Lindbergh was on his world tour when he got lost in the fog off the coast. All was white until he saw an illuminated letter B atop the Breakers hotel through the haze. He flew toward the light, broke through the fog and landed at Long Beach’s airport from where he was driven to the hotel to rest.
In 1933, a 6.4 magnitude earthquake caused widespread destruction and the death of over 100 people and resulted in catastrophic damage to the tourism industry. With the hotel suffering only minimal damage, it proudly served as the headquarters for the Red Cross during the relief efforts.
In 1938 Conrad Hilton purchases the hotel to make it the 8th Hilton in his chain. He converts the Penthouse floor into the Sky Room which quickly became one of the most popular restaurants rivaling the Brown Derby and Coconut Grove, often referred to as the Rainbow Room of the west coast.

The US Grand Prix West, a Formula One race from 1976 to 1983 took place in Long Beach with the course passing in front of the hotel. Niki Lauda’s Ferrari was often photographed in front of the Breakers hotel. In 1989, the hotel is designated a Long Beach Historic Landmark.
July 28, 2022, new name of Fairmont Breakers Long Beach is announced
