Discover
Reminiscent of the hot springs that beckoned travellers over 100 years ago, the pulsating waterfalls and the mineral pool in the heart of the Banff spa soothe troubled spirits.
The Beginning
William Cornelius Van Horne had a vision to bring the beauty of the Canadian Rocky Mountains to the rest of the world. He commissioned blueprints for an impressive hotel to be built at the convergence of the Bow and Spray River, in what is now known as Canada's first National Park. Construction began in 1887 and the hotel publically opened on June 1, 1888.
By the start of the twentieth century, the Banff Springs luxury Hotel had developed into one of the top three mountain getaways in North America. Disaster struck in 1926 when the original wooden hotel burnt down. It was rebuilt larger and in its present appearance commencing in 1928.
Roaring Twenties and the Great Depression
Throughout the 1920s and 30s, the hotel was able to combine day-to-day hotel life with the concept of luxurious hotel living. The depression played a part in the 'golden era' as well.
Through the 1940s to 60s, the hotel struggled to reclaim the success it had before the war. The hotel went through a significant change, adapting to the economics of the time. Transportation, convenience and availability to monetary funds jointly changed the whole perspective of the hotel.
"Since we can't export the scenery, we'll have to import the tourists."
William Cornelius Van Horne
By the 70s, the hotel reached a pivotal point. For the first time, Banff Springs remained open for the winter season, becoming a year-round resort destination. The 80s then brought expansion and renovation back to the hotel.

wonderful relaxing beautiful views
We had never been to Banff before and our stay at the Fairmont Banff Springs was wonderful. The entire staff were extremely helpful & attentive to our needs, particularly the Fairmont Gold Concierge. Having breakfast and snacks right down the hall from us in the Gold Room was especially nice. We also took advantage of the Adventure Center and went on a guided hike. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable about the fauna & foliage, which was fantastic! We look forward to a return trip one day!!
Came with Insight Tours. It was fabulous
Great place to stay in Banff. Rooms are a little small, but not bad. Very clean and great staff. On site dining options are good. Downtown is only about a 5 - 10 minute walk.
We loved the hotel and especially the gold level. The customer service from every employee that we encountered was absolutely fabulous.
Upon my arrival in the early morning hours, I was assigned a room with a malfunctioning window shade, which compromised privacy due to its direct exposure to the parking garage. Additionally, the room’s heating system was not functioning optimally, resulting in a chilly room temperature of 16.1°C, which was quite uncomfortable given the cold weather that evening. I reached out to guest services at approximately 10AM. Prompt assistance was provided following my call. The maintenance staff, upon assessing the situation, concurred with my suggestion to change rooms. The hotel staff expedited this process efficiently. The replacement room, located down the same hallway, offered a pleasing view and no such issues. The rest of my stay was highly satisfactory, living up to the standards I have come to expect as a frequent traveler.
We arrived with our Tauck tour.....everything was impeccable. Great Stay. However, we did not have a satisfactory stay in the Lake Louise Location. Our room had a mattress that did not fit on the bed, and there was mold in the shower. We were in room 339 with our Tauck Tour. The issue was brought to the conceirge, who bumped it up to a manager. They were both horrified and apologized, but we never heard from them again. I have pictures if there is any doubt. Last name P., July 9th 2024.

Would have preferred more room service options
The stay was lovely and all staff were helpful and attentive. The gentleman with the golden dangly earring who gave us a lift to the Waldaus restaurant and who also helped us at guest services the following morning was lovely and friendly. The gentleman who took us on the shuttle to lake Louise and morraine lake was so friendly and knowledgeable and is a credit to your company. Neil who served us in the vermillion room was wonderful-very attentive and a pleasure to speak to. It would have been helpful on arrival/check in to be told about the services included in our stay so we could make the most of them, ie it would have been good to have been told that there were fitness classes during the day
