Oru—An Asian Bistro
Fairmont Pacific Rim has partnered with
local design and architectural firm mgb
to create Oru, an upscale restaurant.
Aiming to capitalize on Vancouver’s
multicultural vibe, the restaurant will focus
on traditional, Pacific Rim–inspired dishes,
all authentically prepared using locally
sourced and responsibly harvested
ingredients. |
|
In addition to its picturesque setting on
Vancouver’s waterfront, Oru will feature
a number of innovative interior design
elements. mgb is currently collaborating
with local origami artist Joseph Wu to
create a spectacular, 180-foot-long light
sculpture, which will run the length of
the restaurant. As well, a wall of reclaimed
wood, from the hotel site, will separate the restaurant’s dining room from its

|
winetasting
and private-dining areas. While
the name Oru has no direct translation, it is
derived from the Japanese word meaning
“to fold.”

In January, we proudly celebrated the
“topping off” of Fairmont Pacific Rim.
Now, our 48 floors are showing their true
expanse, rising up through the fog (as per
the widely circulated and iconic shot of our
city during the recent weather anomaly).
As one of the city’s tallest buildings, free
from the cluttered view of neighbouring
skyscrapers, Fairmont Pacific Rim will
treat guests to an unsurpassed vista, where
buzzing metropolis, peaceful ocean and
reaching mountains gloriously meet.
The recent construction developments
have left me feeling that I myself have
risen above the fog. And, to me, a 27-year
hotelier with three openings under my
belt, this next stage—in which we begin
to formulate the product—is where the
real fun begins!
One of my favourite areas is the room
design. And each of our rooms, ranging
from 400 to 3,200 square feet, will
beautifully balance streamlined minimalism
with lavish details to offer a warm and
opulent setting. Fresh, silvery champagne

|
tones will bring the airiness of the
natural landscape into focus, while views
abound of the harbour, the city or the pool.
Ensuring that guests have every opportunity
to immerse themselves in Vancouver, many
rooms will also feature private balconies,
terraces or patios; of these, 18 will boast
outdoor fireplaces. True to our promise of
affording every possible amenity, all guest
rooms will offer 42-inch TVs and state of-
the-art, surround-sound technology;
Stearns & Foster beds, along with fine
Italian Mascioni bed and bath linens;
and expansive marble bathrooms, with
Mirror TVs, soaker or jetted tubs, and
separate showers.
Taking this decadence a step further, the
hotel’s 20th and 21st floors will house
Fairmont Gold, our 40-room, concierge-graced
hotel-within-a-hotel. See our
future newsletters for more details.
And the excitement continues… On
February 12, we were on hand to celebrate
the one-year countdown to the Vancouver
2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games. As the OMEGA Olympic
Countdown clock counts the days, hours and minutes to the opening
|
|
ceremonies,
I am reminded of our own approaching
target: only 11 months until Fairmont
Pacific Rim opens its doors to the world.
