Mexico Resorts: The Fairmont Pierre Marques Resort

Hotel History

Nested in a thriving garden setting on one of the world's most beautiful bays, The Fairmont Pierre Marques has been a favored retreat since the golden days of Hollywood. Originally built by J. Paul Getty, one of the richest men in the world at that time, this luxury hotel in Mexico has endured the test of time always providing guests with exceptional accommodations and service.

During the 1950s, developers sought a spot outside of Mexico City (but close enough) to plan a luxury resort in Acapulco, Mexico, that still retained the peace, quiet elegance, and simplicity so common in the region’s small tropical villas. They climbed the ridge to the southeast and after recovering from their first ecstatic view of the lagoons, mountains and sea strung out like a necklace, with the blue-green jewel of Puerto Marques as the clasp, they knew that this was what they were after. At that time, Paul Getty chose this tropical paradise as his own, private hideaway.

Later on, Paul Getty decided to further develop the area. Many plans were considered. Paul Getty, whose great grandfather founded Gettysburg in Pennsylvania, and who owned Spartan Trailers, suggested a deluxe trailer park. George Getty, who owned several oil companies, thought a motor court was more appropriate; then, a colony hotel was planned. The Pierre Marques opened its doors for the first time in 1957.

In January 1957 a journalist wrote an extensive article about the Pierre Marques luxury resort in Mexico; among other things he described the hotel as 'a miniature city with all utilities' and was impressed by the fact that the hotel featured the only all electric kitchen in Mexico. This was only one of many news stories featuring the Pierre Marques and it's uniqueness in the years to follow.

In the 70s Paul Getty sold all his hotel business, and the Pierre Marques became part of the Princess collection of luxury resorts in Mexico, Arizona and Barbados. In 1998 Canadian Pacific purchased the sun-destination Princess Hotels.

In October 1999 the administrators of Canadian Pacific Hotels and the luxury Fairmont Hotels officially signed a fusion agreement, creating the company Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, whose union brings together two companies with over a century of rich history and exemplary hospitality.

Today, The Fairmont Pierre Marques luxury resort in Mexico is a legendary hotel and a quiet paradise, hidden away among 480 acres of palm, mango and lime trees on the longest and most beautiful beach in Acapulco. The Fairmont Pierre Marques is extraordinarily exotic, yet as easy and comfortable as an old friend whose secrets you share.
