Reminiscent of the hot springs that beckoned travellers over 100 years ago, the pulsating waterfalls and the mineral pool in the heart of the Banff spa soothe troubled spirits.
The Beginning
William Cornelius Van Horne had a vision to bring the beauty of the Canadian Rocky Mountains to the rest of the world. He commissioned blueprints for an impressive hotel to be built at the convergence of the Bow and Spray River, in what is now known as Canada's first National Park. Construction began in 1887 and the hotel publically opened on June 1, 1888.
By the start of the twentieth century, the Banff Springs luxury Hotel had developed into one of the top three mountain getaways in North America. Disaster struck in 1926 when the original wooden hotel burnt down. It was rebuilt larger and in its present appearance commencing in 1928.
Roaring Twenties and the Great Depression
Throughout the 1920s and 30s, the hotel was able to combine day-to-day hotel life with the concept of luxurious hotel living. The depression played a part in the 'golden era' as well.
Through the 1940s to 60s, the hotel struggled to reclaim the success it had before the war. The hotel went through a significant change, adapting to the economics of the time. Transportation, convenience and availability to monetary funds jointly changed the whole perspective of the hotel.
"Since we can't export the scenery, we'll have to import the tourists."
William Cornelius Van Horne
By the 70s, the hotel reached a pivotal point. For the first time, Banff Springs remained open for the winter season, becoming a year-round resort destination. The 80s then brought expansion and renovation back to the hotel.

Kudos to whoever hires staff. They all combine responsive professionalism with friendliness.
Excellent service
I was there for a convention, everything was wonderful, but I would have liked to see more bar or lounges available as many times we could not find a seat at the bar. The rooms and view were fantastic, but I was in room 725 only complaint is that the bathroom light was so dim I could not see myself to groom and it needs another pot light added in bathroom. Otherwise all was fantastic.
I attended a conference at the conference center and took advantage of the conference rate and room booking. My wife joined me and she was able to enjoy some of the amenities while we were there. I would love to return to Banff and staying with you would be at the top of my list.
What a wonderful conference experience. From the upgrade to the gold floor, the beautiful setting and wonderful staff, this stay had me wanting to come back again and again. Thank you so much for the great experience, I will be back as much as possible.
My stay at Fairmont was very good. The accommodations were comfortable, clean, and the service was excellent.
Marissa Roux was a standout in customer service within a group of very accomplished Gold floor team members.
room was not 100% Fairmont standard. TV remote wasn't working and no complimentary water. I didn't feel welcomed - although there was a plate of chocolate there wasn't a personal card with a welcome note. Also, the drink card was an after thought. I found it tucked in by the door right after I was already attending the event.
Enjoy the time stay in Fairmont Gold Lounge, good environment and tea-time supply. However, this time my room always had a weird sound during nighttime, other than that everything was excellent.
