Discover
Reminiscent of the hot springs that beckoned travellers over 100 years ago, the pulsating waterfalls and the mineral pool in the heart of the Banff spa soothe troubled spirits.
The Beginning
William Cornelius Van Horne had a vision to bring the beauty of the Canadian Rocky Mountains to the rest of the world. He commissioned blueprints for an impressive hotel to be built at the convergence of the Bow and Spray River, in what is now known as Canada's first National Park. Construction began in 1887 and the hotel publically opened on June 1, 1888.
By the start of the twentieth century, the Banff Springs luxury Hotel had developed into one of the top three mountain getaways in North America. Disaster struck in 1926 when the original wooden hotel burnt down. It was rebuilt larger and in its present appearance commencing in 1928.
Roaring Twenties and the Great Depression
Throughout the 1920s and 30s, the hotel was able to combine day-to-day hotel life with the concept of luxurious hotel living. The depression played a part in the 'golden era' as well.
Through the 1940s to 60s, the hotel struggled to reclaim the success it had before the war. The hotel went through a significant change, adapting to the economics of the time. Transportation, convenience and availability to monetary funds jointly changed the whole perspective of the hotel.
"Since we can't export the scenery, we'll have to import the tourists."
William Cornelius Van Horne
By the 70s, the hotel reached a pivotal point. For the first time, Banff Springs remained open for the winter season, becoming a year-round resort destination. The 80s then brought expansion and renovation back to the hotel.

I am so pleased with the assistance of the staff and especially the valets. My daughter's wedding was scheduled to be at the Tunnel Mountain Reservoir but the weather was very bad and thankfully the FBS were able to accommodate a request so she was able to have the ceremony in the Angus Room at a reasonable rate. Following the ceremony we had dinner in the Vermillion Room which was great as usual. Earlier we had convened in the Rundle Lounge for drinks and although the hotel had provided a complimentary bottle of champagne, the waiter still charged us $65.00 for it, which had to be corrected. Overall we loved our stay. I can say that it was the valets who stole the day however, they were AMAZING, polite, respectful and QUICK because we were squeezed for time on arrival and they were so very helpful. We have stayed at the FBS on many occasions and always enjoy the Castle -- so it was even more special that my daughter was able to have her wedding there as well. One negative -- we were given an early check-in for 11:30 a.m. (IF the rooms were available and ready) and although my daughter and her groom's room was ready early, mine was not ready until 4:15 p.m., but overall it was a minor thing and occurred after the ceremony so I just had to transfer my things from her room to mine. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The guests are friendly and it seems everyone is in a great mood at the FBS and it is easy to see why. We all love an elevated experience in luxurious surroundings!

Not long enough to truly enjoy the hotel & location
Everything was excellent, obviously happy employees!!
We had 2 night stayhere recently. This hotel is an architectural masterpiece with incredible surrounding scenery. The views of the Canadian Rockies from multiple locations in the hotel were breathtaking. The service level throughout our stay was FIVE STAR.
We stayed for 3 nights. The room was beautiful . All the staff were very friendly and helpful.
We celebrated our 40th Anniversary and upgraded to the Gold Floor. Well worth the price for the beautiful, large room with amazing views and a fireplace. Everything about the Gold Floor exceeded our expectations. The canapés and breakfast were delicious and plenty. They honoured us for our anniversary with a bottle of Prosecco, a lovely cake and chocolates in our room upon arrival and a personalized card signed by all the staff. We were impressed by the whole experience here. A great way to celebrate our anniversary. We will be back!
Fairmont Gold was a 24 carat experience! The room was gorgeous the lounge ambience and food was amazing. Not a bad view anywhere in the hotel. Every staff member treated me like I was the most important guest. The gym and pool were spectacular. What an amazing way to watch the sunrise! It’s not often people come to Banff to stay indoors but the hotel was so amazing I didn’t want to leave the building! Thank you for a wonderful stay!
We had an amazing stay on the propert. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful with anything we needed. When we arrived our luggage was lost and all we had was the clothes we were wearing and that provided us with everything that we needed. We got the Gold package which was well worth it with the million dollar view and all the amenities such as breakfast, Hors d’oeuvres and dessert provided daily. The tours provided through the property were fantastic and our tour guide Lucy was amazing. She was full of knowledge and so helpful. We had her for three tours. We plan on coming back in the summer !
